Why Is My AC Freezing Up? 3 Causes You Can Check Yourself
Ice on an air conditioner in the middle of summer looks wrong because it is wrong. A frozen evaporator coil or refrigerant line means your system is working harder while cooling less — and running it frozen can destroy the compressor, the most expensive part in the system.
Here’s what’s usually going on, and what you can check before calling anyone.
1. A clogged air filter (check this first)
Your AC needs steady airflow across the coil to keep it above freezing. A packed filter chokes that airflow, the coil temperature drops, and humidity in the air freezes right onto it.
Check it yourself: pull the filter and hold it up to a light. If you can’t see light through it, replace it, then leave the system OFF (fan ON, if your thermostat allows) for a few hours so the ice melts before you restart cooling.
2. Blocked vents and returns
The same airflow problem shows up when furniture, rugs, or curtains block supply vents — or when most of the vents in the house are closed. Closing vents doesn’t save energy on a central system; it just strangles it.
Check it yourself: walk the house and make sure every vent and the big return grille are open and unobstructed.
3. Low refrigerant (this one’s a pro call)
If the filter is clean and the vents are open but ice keeps coming back, the most likely cause is low refrigerant from a leak. Low pressure makes the coil run too cold, and it will keep freezing no matter how many times you thaw it.
Refrigerant work is licensed-technician territory — it requires EPA certification, and “topping it off” without fixing the leak just rents you a few weeks before the ice returns.
The safe move
If you’ve replaced the filter, opened the vents, thawed the system, and it freezes again: shut the system off and get it looked at. Running a freezing AC is how a $300 repair becomes a $3,000 compressor replacement.
